Alcohol, an 18-year-old driver and a powerful RX-8 do not mix. Raleigh, North Carolina police say alcohol may have contributed to a fiery wreck that killed four Wake County teenagers.
Authorities say a speeding Mazda RX-8 went airborne as it crossed the U.S. 64 Bypass bridge onto Interstate 440 and crashed to the ground 58 feet below. The car burst into flames and the four people inside were killed.
All four of the students, 18-year-old Baker Wood, 17-year-old Anthony Bostic, 18-year-old Steven George, 18-year-old Timothy Steinberg, were seniors at Wakefield. Raleigh police say Wood was driving the Mazda RX-8 when he lost control.
Police aren't saying why they suspect drugs and alcohol, but test results are expected back soon.
The four victims were seniors at Wakefield. They were returning from Greenville, where they had watched the boys' basketball team win a regional championship. Principal Stephen Takacs says the foursome was part of the "Wakefield Wackos," a group of students that led the crowd in cheers at games.
Timothy Steinburg's father is a minister and will preside over his son's funeral on Friday.
